Inspiration - Every word proceedeth out of the mouth of God
Exodus 20:1 – And God spake all these words, saying,
Exodus 24:7 – And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient
2Timothy 3:16 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Peter 1:19-21 - We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost

Where is the Church?
Ask me "Where is the Church?" and I can find her at any and every period from the day when first in the upper room the Holy Ghost came down even until now. In one unbroken line our apostolic succession runs; not through the Church of Rome; not from the superstitious hands of priest-made pospes, or king-created bishops, (what a varnished lie is the apostolic succession of those who boast so proudly of it!) but through the blood of good men and true, who never forsook the testimony of Jesus; through the loins of true pastors, laborious evangelists, faithful martyrs, and honorable men of God, we trace our pedigree up to the fishermen of Galilee and glory that we perpetuate by God's grace that true and faithful Church of the living God, in whom Christ did abide and will abide until the world's crash.

the snare of covetousness
First Read Joshua 6:16-19; 7:1-26
Achan’s tent
(dwelling place), livestock, possessions, and children were cursed by the lust of the eyes and coveteousness. The consequence that Achan, his children, and possessions were first stoned and then burned.
Covetousness builds a nest and begins multiplying, the same way that
foxes have holes and birds have nests (Luke 9:58) – when, through our
disobedience, we make a dwelling place (nest) for the devil, the curse begins
to multiply (make babies) and enlarge its possessions…
Coveteousness
is sin
Exodus
20:17 Thou shalt not
covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his
manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is
thy neighbour’s.
Deuteronomy
5:21 Neither shalt
thou desire thy
neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or
his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy
neighbour’s.
Romans
7:7 What shall we say
then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the
law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. [did not know that lust was sin except the
law said “thou shalt not covet”]
Romans
13:9 For this, Thou
shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou
shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any
other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [Moral
law re-affirmed in New Testament]
Coveteousness is widespread
Jeremiah
6:13 For from the
least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and
from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. [corrupts even those who are supposed to be spiritual
leaders]
1
Corinthians 5:10 Yet
not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or
extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
Lucifer, in
selfish pride, coveted God’s throne
Isaiah
14:12-14 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art
thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said
in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the
stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides
of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the
most High.
Sign of the
times
Romans
1:29 Being filled
with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness;
full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
1
Timothy 6:10 For the
love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the
faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
2
Timothy 3:2 For men
shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy,
2
Peter 2:14 Having
eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable
souls: an heart they have
exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
The Wicked, motivated by coveteousness, encourage covetousness and use your coveteousness to entrap you
Psalms
10:3 For the wicked boasteth of his
heart’s desire [lust], and blesseth [flatters] the covetous, whom
the LORD abhorreth.
Ezekiel
33:31 And they come
unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people,
and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but
their heart goeth after their covetousness.
2
Peter 2:3 And through covetousness shall they
with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long
time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. [it’s a trap!]
Covetousness [a.k.a materialism, consumerism] is a trap! To make merchandise of you, the strategy of
modern marketing and advertising is all about making you dissatisfied with what
you have and making you desire [gotta have!] something you don’t have. You have a perceived need and craving that
makes you act on impulse (bypass the judge at the gate) and gets you to spend
money you don’t have (debt) on something you don’t need, is not worth what you
paid (or owe), and can’t afford to keep.
Once you get it, you no longer want it and immediately want something
else...
Coveteousness
motive for violence and oppression
Jeremiah
22:17 But thine eyes
and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed
innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
Micah
2:2 And they covet
fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them
away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.
Luke
16:14 And the
Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided
him. [suppress the truth in unrighteousness]
Consequences
Habakkuk
2:9 ¶ Woe to him that
coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high,
that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
[Coveting motivates evil covetousness
(unjust gain). Don’t think that you can
escape the flood of evil consequences by building a house high on a hill, or a
high walled castle using unjust gain]
Jeremiah
8:10 Therefore will I
give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall
inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is
given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth
falsely. [God will leave them destitute]
Isaiah
57:17 For the
iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was
wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.
Ephesians
5:5 For this ye know,
that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater,
hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
1
Corinthians 6:10 Nor
thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall
inherit the kingdom of God.
Coveteousness
is a heart infection
Mark
7:20-23 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed
evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts,
covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy,
pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Believers are not to covet
Acts
20:33 I have coveted
no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.
1
Timothy 3:3 Not given
to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler,
not covetous;
1
Thessalonians 2:5 For
neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of
covetousness; God is witness:
Ephesians
5:3 But fornication,
and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as
becometh saints;
Cure for
Covetousness
Colossians
3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;
fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence [lustful fantasies], and covetousness, which is idolatry:
Proverbs
28:16 The prince that
wanteth [is lacking] understanding is
also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
Exodus
18:21 Moreover thou
shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and
place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and
rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
1
Corinthians 5:11 But
now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a
brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a
drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. [do not have fellowship/hang out with
covetousness people]
Change your
focus
Psalms
119:36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. [fill your heart with God’s word]
Proverbs
21:26 He coveteth
greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not. [generosity, put others before self]
1
Corinthians 12:31 But
covet earnestly the best [spiritual] gifts: and yet shew I
unto you a more excellent way [charity].
1
Corinthians 14:39 Wherefore,
brethren, covet to
prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Luke
12:15 And he said
unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth
not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Luke
12:31-34 But
rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto
you. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to
give you the kingdom. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax
not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief
approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is,
there will your heart be also.
Contentment
Luke
3:1-18 …Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with
your wages…
Hebrews
13:5 Let your conversation be without
covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath
said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Philippians
4:11 Not that I speak
in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith
to be content.
1 Timothy 6:5-11 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt
minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
But godliness with
contentment is great gain. For
we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can
carry nothing out. And having
food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into
temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which
drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some
coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through
with many sorrows. But thou, O
man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, patience, meekness.
Thankfulness
Romans
1:21 Because that,
when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were
thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was
darkened. [consequence of not being
thankful]
Ephesians
5:4 Neither
filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient [proper/appropriate]: but rather giving of thanks.
Leviticus
22:29 And when ye will offer a sacrifice
of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will.
1
Chronicles 23:30 And
to stand every morning to
thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;
Psalms
103:2 Bless the LORD,
O my soul, and forget not
all his benefits:
Psalms
26:7 That I may
publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.
Psalms
30:12 To the end that
my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I
will give thanks unto thee for ever.
Psalms
69:30 I will praise
the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
Psalms
92:1 It is a good thing to give thanks unto
the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:
Psalms
116:17 I will offer
to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.
Jesus gave
thanks
Matthew
15:36 And he [Jesus]
took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them,
and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. [Mark 8:6; John
6:11; John 6:23; Luke 22:19; Acts 27:35; Rom 14:6; 1Cor 11:24]
Matthew
26:27 And he took the
cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; [Mark 14:23; Luke 22:17]
Enter His
gates with thanksgiving
Psalms
100:4 Enter into his
gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful
unto him, and bless his name.
Psalms
95:2 Let us come
before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with
psalms.
Psalms
140:13 Surely the
righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy
presence.
2
Corinthians 4:15 For
all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the
thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.
The yoke of covetousness offers no
peace or rest, with Jesus we have need of nothing and find rest
Colossians
3:15 And let the peace
of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful
Matthew
11:29 Take
my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye
shall find rest unto your souls.
Matthew
11:28 ¶ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
God's word is authoritative
Authoritative - Scripture is final authority over our life, for every matter of faith and practice.
Isaiah 55:10-11 - For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Psalm 138:2 - I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name
for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. [Neh 9:5]
Titus 2:15 - These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee

God's word
Matthew 4:4 - But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God [Deut 8:3]
1. Man shall live by every word - authority and applicability of scripture
2. Every word proceedeth out of the mouth of God - scripture is inspired and spiritually discerned

drunk on old wine
Luke 5:39 - No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
"old wine" is fermented alcoholic wine that causes drunkenness, fermentation is a type of leaven which represents corruption. The old wine represents "corruptible seed".
"new wine" is recently squeezed grape juice that is not fermented, the sugar brightens the countenance. New wine represents incorruptible seed of God's word.

who causes divisions?
Romans 16:17-18 - Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Notice who are the ones that cause divisions...
It is not those who prove all things and hold fast to that which is true. It is not those who stay with "the old paths" and remain steadfast the in the doctrine they have learned.
It is those who promote contrary doctrine using good words and fair speeches and deceive the hearts of the simple.

Popery teaches man becomes GOD
A quote from St. Athanasius that is found in Catechism no. 460 of the Catholic Church:
“For the Son of God became man so that we might become God”
Roman Catholicism promotes the lie of the serpent as seen in Genesis 3:5
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
460 The Word became flesh to make us "partakers of the divine nature":78 "For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God."79 "For the Son of God became man so that we might become God."80 "The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods."81
80 St. Athanasius, De inc. 54, 3: PG 25, 192B.

unity
Unity of the body without compromise is only achieved when we are all members of the same family
Family members are those who are of the same father (whether through blood, adoption, or marriage).
Your father is who you are yielded to, either you serve the Father in heaven, or the father of lies.
Those who look to God's word as their final authority are of the same family.
Unity is preserved when any differences between the members are resolved by looking to God's word for the resolution.

incorruptible seed
The ONLY source of
faith
Rom 10:17 - So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by
the word of God.
Rom 14:23b - for whatsoever
is not of faith is sin.
Prove all things
1 Thess 5:21 - Prove all things; hold fast that which is
good.
1 John 4:1 - Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the
spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into
the world.
Isaiah 8:20 - To the law and to the testimony: if they
speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them
Acts 17:11 - These were more noble than those in
Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and
searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
You search scripture
in order to tell if something is true.
2 Tim 2:15 - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
You study scripture
in order to rightfully divide the word of truth.
Warning
Deut 12:32 - What thing soever I command you, observe to do
it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. (also Deut 4:2)
Is it fear?
Concerning accusations
of “being in fear”. TRUE! I am in fear…
FEAR OF THE LORD.
The lampstand is the only
source of light inside the tabernacle or temple Holy Place. It has seven lamps on one lampstand made out
of a single piece of pure gold. (Ex
25:31-40; Ex 37:22)
Revelation references
the 7 spirits of God. (Rev 1:4; 3:1;
4:5; and 5:6).
Isaiah 11:2 - and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon
him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and of the fear
of
the Lord;
Fear of the Lord is
not last in the list, it is at the bottom of the list signifying it is the FOUNDATION
upon which knowledge, might, counsel, understanding, and wisdom are built.
Prov 9:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom:
and the knowledge of the holy is understanding
Psalm 111:10 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise
endureth for ever
Ps 119:120 - My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am
afraid of thy judgments.
Phil 2:12b - work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling.
Drunk on corrupted
wine
Luke 5:39 - No man also having drunk old wine straightway
desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
Sowers of
corruptible seed
2 Tim 3:1-9 - This know also, that in the last days perilous
times shall come. For men shall be
lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient
to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, trucebreakers,
false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4
traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the
power thereof: from such turn away. For
of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women
laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ever learning, and never able to come to the
knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes
and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt
minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their
folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
Prov 30:6 - Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove
thee, and thou be found a liar.
Consequences
Rev 22:18-19 - For I testify unto every man that heareth the
words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God
shall add unto him the plagues
that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of
the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of
life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in
this book.
Luke 17:2 - It were better for him that a millstone were
hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one
of these little ones.
Gal 1:6-9 - I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him
that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that
trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach
any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any
man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
2 Cor 11:13-15 - For such are false apostles, deceitful
workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel;
for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers
also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be
according to their works.
2 Peter 2:1 - But there were false prophets also among the
people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall
bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
Isaiah 9:16 - For the leaders of this people cause them to
err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.
Our Responsibility
Eph 5:11 - And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works
of darkness, but rather reprove them.
Instead of reproving
them, many pastors are “bidding God speed” to false teachers for their own gain
but they will not escape the consequences.
2 John 1:10-11 - If there come any unto you, and bring not
this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is
partaker of his evil deeds.

eminent domain in the bible
Eminent Domain - is the power of a state or a national government to take private property
1 Kings 21:1-16
1 And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money. 3 And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee. 4 And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? 6 And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard. 7 And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. 9 And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: 10 and set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. 11 And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. 12 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 13 And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.
15 And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. 16 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.

Did Jesus talk like the King James?
I recently heard someone say "Jesus didn't talk like the King James".
Scripture does not record Jesus speaking like any English translation of the Bible.
Scripture does record Jesus speaking in Hebrew and Aramaic.
The languages of scripture -- Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek -- all have distinct personal pronouns that differentiate between singular and plural.
The second person singular pronouns of thee, thou, thy, and thine which were in common in use in Old English (Anglo-Saxon 5th-12th Centuries), and fell out of common use in Middle English (12th - 15th Century) and are not commonly used in Modern English (15th Century onward).

Even after falling out of common use, these singular pronouns were used in the seven major English translations of Bible up through the Authorized Version of 1611 (a.k.a. King James Bible) to preserve the Greek and Hebrew distinction between singular and plural personal pronouns and adjectives.
Here is a breakdown of how these pronouns are most commonly used:
Here is a breakdown of how these pronouns are most commonly used:
Case | Singular | Plural | Usage |
---|---|---|---|
Objective | Thee | You | When the object of the sentence |
Nominative | Thou | Ye | When the subject of the sentence |
Possessive | Thy | Your | Commonly used before a noun that begins with a consonant/consonant sound (like the article, “a”) |
Possessive | Thine | Yours | Commonly used before a noun that begins with vowel/vowel sound (like the article, “an”). Also used when indicating that something is “absolute and understood” |
Mockers often criticize the use of the "thees and thous", saying it makes it difficult to read.
Far from difficult, just remember this simple rule of thumb:
T=Singular
Y=Plural
Easy right?
Now, keep in mind, every word is significant.
Luke 4:4 - And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
So, exactly how DID Jesus speak?
Take for example His discussion with Nicodemus in John 3:7
ESV | KJB |
---|---|
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ | Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. |
We can see that the KJB preserves the singular and plural distinction in pronouns, where the ESV does not.
Also, compare Matthew 26:62-64
ESV | KJB |
---|---|
And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” | And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. |
and compare Luke 22:31-32
ESV | KJB |
---|---|
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” | And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. |
In the KJB it is clear that the "you" in verse 31 is plural and the four pronouns in verse 32 are singular.
The ESV, NKJV, NIV, and other modern translations all lose the singular/plural distinction that was present in the actual words Jesus spoke.
So, technically speaking, because the King James Bible preserves this singular/plural distinction, Jesus DID speak more like the King James than any of the modern English translations.
